Frequently Asked Questions
Really though, why Wool?
Wool is a wonder fiber! It is incredibly warm yet breathable, naturally moisture-wicking, antimicrobial and odor resistant. Wool is durable but it is also biodegradable which means that unlike synthetic fibers, it won’t outlive us after we’re gone. Wool is a kind and wise choice for both the planet and your own precious human form.
Okay, but why is wool so expensive?
Wool costs more because wool is worth more. The wool our shop works with is ethically and sustainably sourced from trusted suppliers who care about their environmental footprint, fair labor practices and the welfare of the animal producers who make this wonderful fiber possible.
Why are your hats so expensive?
First, see the explanation above for why our raw materials cost more than others. Then, let’s talk for a moment about what it means to be handcrafted—it means that hours of labor and care went into creating this specific, one-of-a-kind object.
When you buy a product from a small business such as Origin Threadcraft, it’s not just my work that you are supporting.
You are also supporting, the ranchers who raise the sheep, the artisans who spin and dye the yarn, the suppliers—big and small—who get the finished product into the hands of crafters, the designer who created the pattern, and finally my own handiwork as I create the finished item for you to enjoy.
It is a very human process in an increasingly automated world and it gives jobs with dignity to very real individuals all the world over.
Sure, you can buy a hat cheaper from Amazon but in the end, what is that hat worth to you? Probably not much.
If however that hat is something you thought about for a long time, saved up for, actively chose and love to wear every minute it’s on your head, you’re probably less likely to misplace it or get bored of it or find yourself having buyer’s regret down the line.
We firmly believe that when we buy less and buy better, we are all on our way to creating a better world.
How do I care for my wool?
Wool does not need to be washed often because it is naturally odor-resistant and anti-microbial, but if you do wish to wash your items please do so by hand using a wool wash or specifically wool-safe mild detergent. We recommend “Soak” or “Eucalan”—available from KnitPicks
If your item includes a faux fur Pom Pom, please take care not to submerge it in water. Fluff the Pom with a hairdryer on the “low” setting or shake the pom to bring it back to life.
Pilling commonly occurs with natural fibers. It is normal and nothing to be alarmed about. To remove pills, use either a pill remover or a clean, dull razor blade.
If you have a problem with your item or have specific repair questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us via email.
